Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

Today is the last day to submit a proposal for the Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities, on the UIC campus November 11-13! The Digital Humanities = everything from using corpora with your students to creating wikis to help your students analyze literature or think through historical facts to designing databases -- and much more. Many LCSL teachers do the Digital Humanities: submit a proposal for the Colloquium! CFP and more information about the Colloquium HERE: http://dhcs.uic.edu/

Weekly Workshop - YouTube 101. If you’ve never thought about YouTube as a teaching tool, this workshop is for you! We’ll show you not just how to upload video, but also edit it, and add subtitles, notes, and music. Want to share videos with your students? We’ll show you how to add them to Blackboard for easy viewing. We’ll also look at how to create playlists of multiple videos to show in class or assign for student viewing at home and how to have students collaborate to create a playlist - ideal for all sorts of tasks from creating a cultural database to reconstructing a narrative in video form.

Can't make the scheduled workshop times below? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu.

LCLC Weekly Workshop: YouTube 101
Week of September 19th - September 23rd

A teaching with technology tip of the week:

Do you use Sharestream for audio activities in Blackboard? If so, SoundCloud (https://soundcloud.com/) is a great alternative that loads fasterand doesn’t take over students’ browser while they’re listening. This is great for listening comprehension and dictation activities because they can listen and complete the exercise at the same time.

To create a SoundCloud account all you need is an email address (make up a new one with Gmail!). Then upload your audio, select the settings you want - we recommend private - and add an image if you’d like. To add it to Blackboard, just click the share button, select Embed, and follow these simple directions for embedding objects in Blackboard.

Do you have a project in mind but aren’t sure how to make it work? Is there a technology that you’d like to learn more about or possibly use in your course? The LCLC is here to help! We have tech tools for every kind of project and can help you find the best way to integrate them effectively and meaningfully into your teaching. Email us at lclc@uic.edu with all your questions!

Did you travel over the summer? Are you an amateur photographer? The LCLC is always looking for new photos to add to the LCLC newsletter, Grant Hall slideshow, and LCLC website. If you have pictures of any country or region whose language / culture we teach in the LSCL that you'd like to share, please send them to stahlabi@uic.edu.

UIC LCLC Facebook and Twitter! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Facebook page and Twitter feed. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings--promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your conversation hour or film series.

We also encourage you and your students to participate in our weekly events in 308 Grant Hall, listed below and on our calendar: lclc.uic.edu. All events at the LCLC are free and open to students of all levels. To request 308 for your cultural event, click here.
