Welcome back for Fall 2020!

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

Welcome back!

All of us at the LCLC are looking forward to working with you this semester.
The drop-in hours are online, 9-5 Monday through Friday: email us at lclc@uic.edu, then join us in the Drop-In Room.

LCLC staff this semester: Iwona, LCLC postdoctoral fellow, new RAs Lily and Kelsi, and returning RAs Juanita, Brian, Lisa, and Anne.

A big thank you to the LCLC Summer Intern, Hanae Kim!

Several of our LCLC RAs were Course Builders over the summer, so there's a wealth of Blackboard and Zoom experience waiting for you.

Peer tutoring: ONLINE LCLC Peer Tutoring for students in BLP French, German, and Spanish begins next week. Our staff has increased: there are now 10 peer tutors, all proud UIC students eager to work with our BLP students. Please send your BLP students in these languages to our LCLC Peer Tutoring website and schedules.

Events: All LCLC events are online this semester. Have an idea for an event for LCSL students? Email us at lclc@uic.edu and we'll help you get it set up.

You can still sign up for LCSL 505 Teaching with Technology 1-credit course.

LCSL 505: First session happened last Friday but there is still time to sign up for this 1 credit hands-on workshop. Whether you struggle with technology a lot, or you simply want to improve some skills or learn how to use some new tools or build an online/blended or technology-enhanced course, this is a great opportunity to practice and explore the instructional tech options! Feel free to email us for more details! The topic of the next session on Friday, Sept 11 is Learning Management Systems and creating a course shell in different LMS's.

UIC LCLC social media! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Facebook page and Instagram and Twitter feeds. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings. Promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your conversation hour or film series.

LCLC Weekly Workshop: Make your class come alive with VoiceThread!

Weekly Workshop: Make your class come alive with VoiceThread!
VoiceThread is a great tool for having students practice pronunciation, record video self-presentations, respond orally to visual or audio prompts, or to move in-class content online and save class time! It's also a great way to have students interact outside of class or for you to easily give detailed audio or video feedback to individual students. VoiceThread is a flexible tool that works on any computer and even mobile devices and can be adapted to meet many other needs! In this workshop, we'll be presenting a general overview of VoiceThread and troubleshooting any issues you may have. Feel free to bring questions!

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu

Weekly Article:

Bilingual Brains Have Better Attention And Focus, Study Finds

"Scientists have found another incentive for you to make the most of your foreign language class - a new study suggests that knowing more than one language can help boost our powers of attention and focus."

"The researchers suggest that the bilingual brain is better at maintaining focus, due to its experience in regularly having to switch between languages - but there doesn't appear to be any advantage in how well it can tune out other distractions."
