CTA gets $1 billion for Red, Purple lines

New federal funding will enable key upgrades to heavily used segments of the CTA's rail system (Red and Purple lines), allowing increased train frequency as well as station accessibility for those with disabilities. While ridership in this corridor has recently increased, other parts of the system also need investment to ensure high ridership and support access to opportunities for all throughout the city and region, says Kate Lowe, UIC assistant professor of urban planning and policy. Illinois law enlists stylists to help abuse victims

Many people experiencing violence may not know where to go to help themselves or their friends and family members. A new Illinois law requiring salon professionals to complete domestic violence and sexual assault awareness training should be beneficial, says Sarah Ullman, UIC professor of criminology, law and justice. Ullman, who studies the impact of sexual assault and recovery outcomes, says efforts by salon staffs to just listen to their clients and refrain from making any judgments are helpful.
