Pictures from the Spring 2020 Involvement Fair and Thursday's Lunar New Year party

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

Welcome to the third week of classes! The semester is beginning in earnest and so are Conversation Hours, Reading Clubs, Film Series, and special events at LCLC. Stop by GH 308 whenever an event that interests you is happening! You can find out about the events we host on our website.

A big thank you to everybody who volunteered at the January 2020 Involvement Fair! As always, we had a lot of interested students visit our table to explore the wide variety of languages, courses, and degree opportunities that the school of LCSL offers. You can see photos from the event here.

Our first special event of the decade was Thursday's Lunar New Year party organized jointly by the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean programs within the Deaprtment of Linguistics in the spirit of collaboration, joy, and friendship! The event featured, games, crafts, and cooking workshops in which attendees made Chinese dumplings, Korean rice cake soup, and Japanese takoyaki! We look forward to having many more exciting and educational events in GH 308 throughout the semester, so be sure to keep an eye out for future presentation, workshops, celebrations, and more! This week we have the First at LAS Spring 2020 event on Wednesday, 1/29 from 10:00 -12:00 in GH 308! Join us then to connect with faculty and staff who proudly indentify as former first-generation college students, participate in mentoring programs that support the college journey, and engage in meaningful conversations around the first-generation college student experience.

Peer Tutoring sessions for this year in French, German, Italian, and Spanish are underway as well! This is a great opportunity for learners to get extra practice and guidance with tricky subjects, so please let your BLP students know that this free resource is available for them!

Finally, the second session of LCSL 505 is happening this Friday at 3pm in GH 304. This meeting's topic is Technology Tools for Specific Purposes and will include hands-on activities on VoiceThread and other interactive solutions.

UIC LCLC social media! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Facebook page and Instagram and Twitter feeds. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings. Promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your conversation hour or film series.

LCLC Weekly Workshop: Interactive mapping and timelines for literature, culture, and linguistics
Week of January 27th-31st
Monday
12-1
GH 301
Wednesday
10-11
GH 301

Weekly Workshop: Interactive mapping and timelines for literature, culture, and linguistics.
How many of your students have spent time in the cities or neighborhoods they read about in your classes? How many could use a little help understanding the historical context or chronology of their readings? Enrich their experience of the novel, cultural history, or linguistic history you are focusing on with a virtual visit through modern day Cuzco, occupied Poznán, medieval Bari, or the major events of the Ming Dynasty. Student research can be used to build individual or group timelines and maps rich in images and video. In this workshop we'll show you four different tools - StoryMapJs, VisualEyes, TimelineJS, and Sutori - and highlight the best uses of each one. Bring your syllabus and your ideas!

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu
