Brush It Like I Floss It

Singing creates “trust, the most important currency for any relationship,” says pediatric dentist Jaha Howard MS '10, who creates fun songs to put his young patients at ease and set a positive environment. In addition to his commitment to instilling good dental hygiene habits among youngsters, Howard serves on his local school district board. Stake in Real Estate

A new career path is open to UIC students as the College of Business Administration launches its fifth academic department, the Stuart Handler Department of Real Estate. It was established thanks to a generous gift from Stuart Handler, CEO of TLC Management Co, who wants students to have a stake in their neighborhoods' real estate. The donation is the second highest ever received by the college. Read more.

 
 

A Voice of Change

“When I saw everything going on in the world, I just knew that I couldn’t sit at home and do nothing," said UIC junior and student-athlete Prevail Bonga, who recently organized a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in her hometown of Downers Grove, Ill., that drew thousands. Read more.

 
 

Winners and Leaders

From winning first place to being selected for prestigious fellowships, UIC students are on top. UIC Competitive Gaming Club’s DOTA 2 won first place and $20,000 in the Collegiate StarLeague competition, and eight students were selected for the distinguished Schweitzer Fellowship, a year-long, service-learning program that helps address the health needs of underserved Chicago communities.

 
 

Champion of Nursing Research

Shannon Zenk MS '99, a UIC College of Nursing collegiate professor, was selected to lead the National Institute of Nursing Research. She will oversee an annual budget of nearly $170 million, which mostly supports research seeking to improve the lives of people with health conditions and developing strategies for well-being.
