Happy November! Peer Tutoring, Language Events, and more are going strong at LCLC!
Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,
LCLC is open every day except Tuesday this week: that day, we will all be voting, see you there!
Questions about Grade Center for this semester? Setting up films for next semester? Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or join us through this link (M-F, 9-5). This week's workshop: Panopto Quizzes. Join us Thursday 4-5pm or Friday 4-5pm --or email us to set up a time to talk about how this will fit into your own classes.
Peer tutoring for our 100-level students in Spanish, French, German, and Italian is going strong! Peer tutors are working with students and also working on their own professional development by researching language and culture facts and posting on the LCLC Peer Tutoring Instagram and Peer Tutoring Blog.
This week's My UIC Language Story is by Felipe (May 2022), a double major in Kinesiology and Neuroscience, an RA, and an LCLC Language Peer Tutor.
LCSL Online Teaching Success Stories: The best tips about online teaching come from our colleagues in LCSL, teaching grad classes, upper-level classes, and 100-level classes. For example, Beth Maldonado suggests: "In breakout groups, I named a leader in each group who would report back to the class. This increased participation". To read more tips and to share your own ideas, visit our Online Teaching Success page.
MY UIC LANGUAGE STORY: Have you checked out the latest stories written by our wonderfully multilingual UIC community? To read them, and to share your own story about how the languages we speak and understand and learn, join us at LCLC Language Stories.
Online Teaching: What is going well for you? How are other LCSL instructors engaging students in our online classes? Visit our Online Teaching Success Stories page and share your own ideas in this short survey (we will post your ideas).
All LCSL instructors are invited to attend this week's LCSL 505 session on Friday, November 6 from 3-4:45pm. The topic of the session is Technology in a Synchronous Online Class, where we will talk about conferencing tools like Zoom, BlackBoard Collaborate, Google Meet, Webex, etc., and discuss good practices for an effective synchronous online class, group activities, time managment, and dealing with tech issues during teaching.
UIC LCLC social media! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Instagram and Twitter feeds. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings. Promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your conversation hour or language event.

Indigenous Activists Are Reimagining Language Preservation Under Quarantine
"As is the case for so many during the pandemic, language activists, linguists, and others who work on revitalization campaigns are reimagining their work at a time when coronavirus has made in-person meetings impossible."
"But if life under the pandemic is frequently characterized by anxiety and loneliness, communal language revitalization projects go some way towards combatting precisely those feelings."
Weekly events for you and your students are ONLINE, listed below and on our calendar: lclc.uic.edu. All events at the LCLC are free and open to students of all levels (and the whole UIC community).
