UICOMP COVID-19 – Update
July 23, 2021
Dear UICOMP Family,
With summer in full swing and as we gear up to welcome the students back on campus this fall, I want to focus my comments this week on wellness. Please be mindful of your own needs, and take care of yourself. Secondly, be kind and mindful of others as we all bring unique circumstances and experiences to our lives, and COVID-19 is no exception. I appreciate you being mindful of your own needs as well as being understanding, patient and supportive of your colleagues and our learners.

AMA Article on Post-COVID Anxiety
As we attempt to transition to our pre-pandemic state, feelings of anxiety and stress and other emotional responses are normal. This June 2021 article from the American Medical Association “What doctors wish patients knew about post-COVID anxiety” addresses the toll the pandemic has taken on mental health and how the transition to pre-pandemic life may bring unique challenges. In the article, I appreciated the quote from Dr. Lisa MacLean, a psychiatrist at Henry Ford Health System – “We are going to have to go through an uncomfortable stage before we get comfortable again.” Keys to support others are empathy, caring, thoughtfulness, kindness and faith in humanity, Dr. MacLean said.

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.”
