Racial Achievement Gap

More than 50 years after the formal dismantling of segregation, the racial achievement gap continues to trouble American schools, says Amanda Lewis, UIC associate professor of African American studies and sociology. Lewis, co-author of the new book, "Despite the Best Intentions: How Racial Inequality Thrives in Good Schools," is available to discuss issues surrounding the disparity and what she found during her five-year study that disputes common explanations of the gap.

To improve policing, community relations is the critical first step, says Juliana Stratton, director of UIC's Center for Public Safety and Justice. She heads a federally funded program to train law enforcement agencies around the country in procedures to build trust within police departments and in the communities they serve.
