Chinese Tea Time (top) and French Film (bottom)! Come join our Language Events!

Dear Faculty, Lecturers and TAs,

Welcome the NEW LCLC peer tutors starting this week: we now have 23 hours a week for Spanish, 22 for French, 10 for German, and 3 for Italian, see our schedule. All tutoring is online and our tutors are eager to hear from LCSL BLP students in Spanish, French, German, and Italian. 104 students in those languages are eligible to take the Peer Tutoring Apprenticeship class in Spring 2020, so send them our way.

LCLC looks forward to hearing from you about your online teaching successes, large and small! Share anything that helped you and your students enjoy the online experience HERE, and we'll publish your tips HERE, where you can also peruse ideas from other LCSL teachers from BLP to grad classes.

Do you speak a language other than English? Then you have a Language Story to tell--and so do 100% of your students. Please encourage them to celebrate the multicultural and multilingual richness of UIC by telling their own UIC Language Story HERE. Elizabeth and Dylan, both undergrads, talk about being bilingual and not yet bilingual but getting there before and during their UIC experience.

The LCSL 505 session from Friday, October 9 has been rescheduled to October 16 at 3:00-4:45 p.m. The topic is Interactive Class Activity and Formative Assessment Tools. The session will focus on using different technology tools to create interactive activities in class in different modalities (F2F, hybrid, online), ensuring greater student engagement during class, and allowing for continuous formative assessment. We will also talk about good practices for group work (especially in the online class setting) and the use of Note-Taking tools (e.g.: Evernote, Notability, One Note, Simplenote, Google Keep) as a tool for group work, formative assessment for instructors, and taking notes for students.
All LCSL instructors are invited to attend ! Mark your calendars and feel free to email us for more information or questions on how to join!

UIC LCLC social media! Encourage your students and colleagues to check out the UIC Language and Culture Learning Center Instagram and Twitter feeds. Stay up-to-date with LCLC happenings. Promoting our pages is a good way to ensure your students know about your language events.

Weekly Workshop
: In this workshop, we will discuss the concept of gamification--the concept of bringing elements of game design into the classroom to spark motivation and encourage engagement. We will learn how to view the "leaderboard" as well as set up Adaptive Release for assignments on Blackboard. Adaptive Release will allow you to set "goals" and turn the mundane task of doing homework into something more interactive.

Click here to join the workshop as a guest during the times listed above.

Can't make the scheduled workshop times? Email us to set up a meeting at the LCLC or in your office: lclc@uic.edu

Weekly Article:

The Top 5 Benefits of Gamification in Learning

"[Gamification is] a simple concept that builds learner engagement, helps to change perceptions and attitudes and develops skills through a practical, applied, and thoroughly hands-on approach to learning."

"Gamification in e-learning offers the opportunity for learners to engage with content in an effective, informal learning environment. If learners get excited about learning, they are more likely to retain information."
